Named by Morrison P. Bridgland in 1916. Ashlar is a form of masonry and the mountain was named for its smooth appearance. Official name.

Six kilometres in length, Ashlar Ridge dominates the view as one drives up the Fiddle River valley on the way to Miette Hotsprings. This great slab of Palliser Limestone stands almost vertically, classic front range geology.
