Lord John Campbell Gordon was the Marquis of Aberdeen as well as the Governor General of Canada from 1893 until 1898. During the first year of his term he visited Lake Louise and the mountain was named in his honour by James J. McArthur in 1897. Prior to 1897 it was referred to as Hazel peak but there is no record of who Hazel was.
Its ascent in 1894 by Samuel Allen, L.F. Frissel, and Walter Wilcox was the second in the Lake Louise area. Collier Peak had been climbed 1893. |
